Lunch meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat Ms. Maimounah M. Sharif.

The Norwegian Mapping Authority and Habitat Norway have the great pleasure to invite you to a lunch meeting with the Executive Director of UN-Habitat Ms. Maimounah M. Sharif. She is visiting Oslo to attend the inaugural OSLO PAX Conference, September 4th-5th. This is a call to action on peace and climate change – inspired by Alfred Nobel and the Nobel Peace Prize. Ms. Sharif is educated as an urban planner and has a background as Mayor of Penang Island, Malaysia.

During the lunch event she will present UN Habitat’s new Strategic Plan for 2020-2023. Its main mission is to promote transformative change in cities and human settlements through knowledge, policy advice, technical assistance and collaborative action to leave no one and no place behind. The strategy has been described as one of the most radical planning documents in the history of the UN with emphasis on reduced spatial inequality and poverty, enhanced shared prosperity of cities and regions, strengthened climate action, improved urban environment and effective urban crises prevention and response.

The Mapping Authority and Habitat Norway have for many years worked with UN-Habitat through respectively the Global Land Tool Network and the World Urban Campaign. Our common focus is on the living conditions of marginalized groups and poverty in both urban and rural contexts. The starting point has been that 75% of the global population lack legally recognized documentation that they own the land they live on or use for production. This is an important obstacle for efforts to create acceptable living conditions for all. Some of our challenges will also be presented in the meeting.
