In order provide urban areas that are accessible for everyone, we need policies and practices to develop safe vibrant neighbourhoods, as well as approaches to enhance accessibility to these through co-production and inclusive processes. In line with the 2030 Agenda and the New Urban Agenda (NUA), previous ‘Neighbourhoods for All’ events have identified safety as a key determinant for people’s quality of life, particularly for young people and women, in both private and public spaces.
Habitat Norway, UN-Habitat, UCLG and VibeLab are collaborating to promote the sharing of knowledge and learning between cities, civil society and actors from around the world. The aim is to facilitate a peer review process in line with the UN Guidelines on Safer Cities. The process will identify and engage cities that already have established city safer policies and programmes to consolidate knowledge of what has worked, advance mutual learning, as well as draw on innovations to promote the integrated solutions envisioned in the 2030 Agenda and the NUA.
This Urban October webinar marks the kick-off for the webinar series that will run from November 2023 until April 2024. The outcome of the process is planned to be presented at the next session of the World Urban Forum in Cairo, Egypt in November 2024.
