Fair play in Rio? Film premiere & debate

The Football World Cup 2014 and Olympics 2016 – what will be the impact on the favelas? Film premiere & panel discussion – at Litteraturhuset (Amalie Skram), Oslo, Monday 26th of November, at 19.00h. Free entrance.

The documentary ‘Before The Party’ will premiere at Litteraturhuset followed by an open debate. The film is made by NIBR scientist Einar Braathen related to his research project in Brazil. It shows the contradictions between the authorities and parts of the local community in Rio de Janeiro. As Brasil will host the FIFA World Cup (2014) and the Olympic Summer Games (2016) – how do the preparations for the mega sporting events shape the life in the favelas and the relations between poor and rich people?

Panel discussion led by Torkjell Leira (human geographer, expert on Brazil) and with Gilmar Mascarenhas (professor at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, football enthusiast, expert on the impact of mega sports events on urban development), Einar Braathen (senior researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research, based in Rio 2011-12), Synne Bergby (architect and leader of Habitat Norway) and Malcolm Langford (research fellow and director of the Socio-Economic Programme at the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights).

Organized by NIBR in co-operation with Norwegian Latin America Research Network.
