Etter stor suksess med fjorårets ordning, utlyser Habitat Norge (HN) igjen stipend for studenter som vil skrive masteroppgave om urbanisering i et globalt perspektiv. For studieåret 2022/2023 utlyses tre stipend på kr. 10,000. Interesserte bes søke innen 11.11.2022

Dette er et tilbud til deg som ønsker å skrive masteroppgave innenfor Habitat Norges tematiske satsingsområder!

HVA ER HN?

HN er en frivillig organisasjon etablert i 1988, som drøfter og belyser by- og boligspørsmål i et globalt perspektiv. Som tematisk avdeling i Norsk Bolig og Byplanforening (Norsk BOBY) prioriteres arbeidet for bærekraftig utvikling, særlig rettet mot å bedre levekårene for urbane fattige og marginaliserte. HN er den eneste organisasjonen i Norge med et slikt
mandat, og vi fungerer som et tverrfaglig nettverk innenfor fagfeltet. HN er pådriver for ny politikk, og utveksling av informasjon og kunnskap nasjonalt og globalt.

HVORFOR HN?

By- og bosetningsspørsmål er fremdeles neglisjert i globalt utviklingsarbeid. «De kan klare seg selv», hevdes det. De siste tiårene har sterk befolkningsvekst, urbanisering og feminisering av fattigdom og ulikhet, klima- og miljøutfordringer, pandemier, kriger og konflikter, tvunget fram større oppmerksomhet om emnet. HN arbeider for at slike utfordringer settes på dagsorden i norsk og global politikk. Vi ønsker å fremme forslag som kan bidra til å løse bærekraft-utfordringer som i økende grad finnes i byområder.

Utgangspunktet for HNs arbeid er FNs bærekraftmål og Ny Urban Agenda.
HN jobber aktivt med å bygge nettverk for å forstå, kommunisere og håndtere urbaniserings-utfordringer over nasjonale grenser. Våre partnere omfatter både globale aktører som UN-Habitat og Cities Alliance, samt grasrotbevegelser som Slum Dwellers International, Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, Huairou Commission og Orangi Pilot Project – verdens største slumoppgraderingsprosjekt i Karachi. De siste årene har HN blant annet satt søkelys på internasjonal boligspekulasjon, det norske Oljefondets investeringer i det multinasjonale selskapet Blackstone, tvungne utkastelser, og livet og utfordringene i gata.

HN har kommet med flere innspill til Regjeringens bærekraftarbeid, blant annet Regjeringens Handlingsplan lansert i juni 2021. Vår nyeste publikasjon, Verden av byer/Planet of Cities (2020/21), er beregnet på lokale og nasjonale myndigheter, politikere, byråkrater, planleggere, arkitekter, og ikke minst studenter og lærere opptatt av en bærekraftig framtid.

Gjennom denne stipendordningen inviterer vi masterstudenter til å bidra til å videreutvikle HNs faglige og politiske plattform.

TEMA FOR OPPGAVESKRIVING

De siste årene har HNs arbeid konsentrert seg om retten til trygg bolig og de sosiale bærekraft-dimensjonene. Videre har vi vektlagt arkitektur- og planfaglige problemstillinger, og stilt spørsmål ved hvilken forståelse som ligger til grunn for det vi bygger og former.

Søkere oppfordres til å arbeide med spørsmål knyttet til våre hovedtemaer. Men kandidater velges primært på bakgrunn av faglig kvalitet, allmenn interesse og nytenkning. Oppgavetema og problemstilling bør trekke linjer mellom lokale og globale perspektiv, og søke bygging av overførbar kompetanse mellom ulike kontekster. Her følger en liste over sentrale HN-temaer de siste årene:

Arkitektur og byplanlegging:

• Forståelse av byen og boligen som arkitektonisk form
• Byen og boligen som rettighet
• Transport og offentlige rom
• Omforming og gjenbruk
• Urban helse
• Deltakelse; nye metoder for bærekraftig byutvikling
• Bosettinger for flyktninger

Strukturelle utfordringer og sosiale spørsmål:

• Land- og eiendomsspørsmål
• Inklusjon og eksklusjon i ‘smarte byer’/‘smart cities’ og ‘null-utslipps byer’/‘zero-emission cities’
• Migrasjon og bosetting
• Trygge byrom/sikkerhet i byer
• Klimaendringer og klimatilpasning i byer
• Arktiske byers bærekraft
• Byer under pandemier
• Oljefondets globale investeringer i bolig og eiendom/menneskerettighetsperspektiv for investeringer

Viktig informasjon
• Søknadsfristen for studieåret 2022/ 2023 er fredag 11. november 2022
• Vi lyser ut tre stipender á NOK 10 000,-
• Stipendiater bes sammenstille hoveddiskusjoner og funn fra master oppgaven i en artikkel (skrift og / eller tegninger) på 4-5 sider som leveres til Styret mot slutten av studieåret 2023
• Halvparten av stipendet deles ut ved prosjektstart, resten ved innsending av nevnte artikkel

Hva kan HN tilby?

• Inkludert i stipendet er ett års gratis medlemskap i HN
• Mulighet til å legge fram egne kapittelutkast for kommentarer og innspill fra representanter for styret med lang erfaring fra fagfeltet 
• Mulighet til å publisere på HNs hjemmesider
• Mulighet til å presentere arbeidet på ett eller flere av våre arrangementer. Evt. også på internasjonale møter og konferanser, etter nærmere avtale med HN

ARE YOU WRITING A MASTER’S THESIS ON URBANIZATION IN A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE?

Habitat Norway (HN) is announcing scholarships for students wishing to write a master’s thesis on urbanization in a global perspective. For the academic year 2022 / 2023, three scholarships of NOK 10,000 are open for application. Interested students are asked to apply by 11.11.2022.

This is an offer to students who want to write a master’s thesis within Habitat Norway’s thematic focus areas!

WHAT IS HN?

HN is a voluntary organization established in 1988 which discusses and sheds light on issues regarding urban planning and housing in a global perspective. As a thematic department within the Norwegian Housing and Town Planning Association (Norsk BOBY), HN prioritizes efforts on sustainable development that especially target the improvement of living conditions for the urban poor and marginalized communities. HN is the only organization in Norway with such a mandate, functioning as an interdisciplinary network in the field. HN is a driving force for new policies, and the exchange of information and knowledge nationally and internationally.  

WHY HN?

Urbanization and settlement-related issues are still neglected within global development work. “They can manage on their own,” it is claimed. In recent years, rapid population growth, urbanization, the feminization of poverty and inequality, climate and environmental challenges, pandemics, wars and conflicts, have increased the attention given to the urban field.

HN works to highlight this agenda in Norwegian and global politics. We seek to promote proposals that help solve challenges of sustainability which are increasingly located in urban areas. HN’s work is based on the UN’s sustainability goals and the New Urban Agenda. HN seeks to build networks in order to understand, communicate and deal with challenges of urbanization across national borders. Our partners include global players such as UN-Habitat and Cities Alliance, as well as grassroots movements such as Slum Dwellers International, the Asian Coalition for Housing Rights, the Huairou Commission, and the Orangi Pilot Project – the world’s largest slum upgrading project in Karachi.

Among other topics, HN has put a spotlight on the increasing commodification and speculation of housing internationally, the Norwegian Petroleum Fund’s investments in the multinational company Blackstone, forced evictions, and everyday life and challenges on the street.

HN has contributed actively to the Norwegian Government’s work on sustainable developmen, including the Government’s Action Plan, launched in June of 2021. Our latest publication, Planet of Cities / Verden av Byer 2020/21), is intended for local and national authorities, politicians, bureaucrats, planners, architects, students and teachers concerned with a sustainable future.

We now invite MSc. students to contribute to the further development of HN’s academic and political platform.

TOPICS FOR WRITING

In recent years, HN’s efforts have concentrated on the right to safe housing and the social sustainability dimensions. Furthermore, we have emphasized architecture and planning, raising questions of what perspectives underlines our practices in shaping the built environment.

Applicants are encouraged to work on issues related to our main topics. However, the choice of candidates is based primarily on academic quality, innovation and public relevancy. Project themes should seek to include local and global perspectives, and to build reliability across different contexts. HN’s primary topics in the last years can be summed up as:

Architecture and urban planning:

• Understanding of the city and the home as architectural form
• The city and the home as a right
• Transport and public spaces
• Transformation and reuse
• Urban health
• Participation; new methods for sustainable urban development
• Settlements for refugees

Structural challenges and social questions:

• Land and property issues
• Inclusion and exclusion in ‘smart cities’ and ‘zero-emission cities’
• Migration and settlement
• Safe urban spaces / security in cities
• Climate change and climate adaptation in cities
• The sustainability of Arctic cities
• Cities during pandemics
• The Oil Fund’s global investments in housing and property /
  human rights perspective for investments

What can HN offer?

• One-year free membership to HN
• The opportunity to present drafts for comments and input from representatives of the Board with long experience in the field
• The opportunity to publish on HN’s website
• The opportunity to present the work at one or more of our events. Possibly also at international meetings and conferences, following agreement with HN
• Coverage of travel costs for attending presentation meetings and / or events following agreement with HN

What should the application contain?

Send a brief application that contains:

• Name, address, and contact information
• Documentation of admission to a higher education institution in Norway
• Name of any supervisor
• Start-up date + planned submission date
• Potentially name of the Board member you have been in contact with
• Brief budget + bank account number for the transfer of scholarships

• A project description (1-3 pages), which includes:
  – Problem statement
  – Research question(s)
  – Proposed methodology
  – Language: the dissertation can be written in English, Norwegian, Swedish or Danish
