WORLD HABITAT DAY – INFRASTRUCTURE 2013: COMMUNICATION
New information and communication technology as infrastructure in growing cities and informal settlements.
Digital information and communication technology have become a necessary infrastructure of the urban environment today. For the inhabitants of informal settlements and urban poor, new mobile technology, social media and internet services makes formerly unavailable services and information available. Mobile currency, information about medical issues, updates on security issues and prices on goods are communicated with new technology. Mobile technology, the internet and social media increases transparency, but also provides a platform for inhabitants in informal areas to spread information on issues affecting them and voice their opinion.
What kind of role has these tools as a necessary infrastructure in urban planning and development strategies? Do they contribute to securing the rights of slum dwellers and contribute to a more prosperous life?

Ny informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi som infrastruktur i voksende byer og uformelle bosettinger.
Digital informasjons- og kommunikasjonsteknologi har blitt en nødvendig infrastruktur i dagens urbane områder. For innbyggerne i uformelle områder og for urbane fattige har ny mobilteknologi, sosiale medier og internettjenester blitt et verktøy som tilgjengeliggjør tjenester og informasjon som ellers er utilgjengelige. Mobilvaluta, tjenester for medisinsk informasjon, varepriser eller sikkerhetsoppdateringer vokser stadig. Ny kommunikasjonsteknologi og sosiale tjenester bidrar til et mer transparent samfunn, og gjør det også mulig for innbyggerne i uformelle områder å få en stemme, og bli hørt.
Hvordan behandles disse verktøyene som en nødvendig infrastruktur i planleggings- og utviklingssammenheng? Bidrar digital teknologi til bedre rettigheter og redusert fattigdom for slumbeboere?
